Legend

  • Defender
  • Run without ball
  • Cone

Most agility in football is reactive: the defender does not know where the attacker will go. This duel trains reading the attacker's body and changing direction explosively. It works as the last part of a warm-up and needs only a few cones.

Objective

React to an opponent's movement and change direction faster than them.

Organisation

  • Area of 10 × 8 m. Two 2 m gates on the left and right sides. Attacker on one line, defender facing them on a parallel line 4 m away.

How it works

  1. The attacker feints and sprints to either gate; the defender must arrive at the same gate first, on their own line.
  2. Point to whoever arrives first.
  3. 6 duels, then swap roles; 3 rounds.

Coaching points

  • Attacker: use feints with the shoulders and hips before going.
  • Defender: watch the hips, stay low, short steps.
  • Push off with the outside leg when changing direction.

Progressions

  • Gates further apart (12 m).

Regressions

  • Attacker must go on the coach's whistle (no feints).

Variations

  • With a ball: the attacker dribbles to the gate.

Key principles

  • Read the hips, explode.

    Reaction Sprint Duel

Two players react to the coach's call, touch the called cone and race to a ball 8 m away. The first to the ball attacks; the other defends in a 1v1 to two mini goals.
