Speed in football starts with the brain: see, decide, go. This drill adds a colour call to a race to the ball, so players react to a signal and then have to win a real duel. It is short, competitive and a great way to finish a warm-up with maximum intensity.
Objective
Improve reaction speed and acceleration over short distances, and turn a race to the ball into a 1v1.
Organisation
- 20 × 15 m area. Start position 4 m from the side line, with a blue cone and a yellow cone 5 m either side.
- A ball 8 m in front of the start. Two mini goals at the far end.
- Players in pairs, in two queues.
How it works
- Two players stand side by side, 2 m apart, facing the ball.
- The coach calls 'blue' or 'yellow'. Both players touch that cone and race to the ball.
- The first player to the ball attacks the mini goals; the other defends.
- The duel lasts a maximum of 8 seconds. Rest at least 45 seconds between repetitions.
Coaching points
- Stand in an athletic position: knees bent, weight forward.
- First steps short and powerful, arms driving.
- Arrive at the ball ready to take it away from the opponent with the first touch.
- Loser of the race: recover quickly and defend goal-side.
Progressions
- Start from a different position: sitting, lying face-down, facing away.
- Coach calls a number instead of a colour (odd = blue, even = yellow).
Regressions
- No cone touch: straight race on the call.
- Ball closer (5 m).
Variations
- Coach throws the ball in and both players race to it, making the start unpredictable.
Key principles
- React, then accelerate.
- Short sprints, full recovery.
- Finish with a real action.
