Players run faster when there is a ball and an opponent to beat. The coach rolls the ball towards goal; both players sprint, the winner shields or shoots, the loser recovers and defends. It combines acceleration with 1v1 play and finishing.
Objective
Accelerate to win the ball first, then protect it and finish against a recovering opponent.
Organisation
- 20 × 30 m in front of a goal with a goalkeeper.
- Two start cones 6 m apart, 28 m from goal. The coach stands between them with the balls.
How it works
- The coach plays a ball 15 m forward; both players sprint for it.
- The first to the ball attacks; the other defends. 8 seconds to finish.
- Players walk back on the outside; 45 seconds between turns.
Coaching points
- Explode out of the start: three quick first steps.
- Arrive with your body between the opponent and the ball.
- Finish early, before the defender gets goal-side.
Progressions
- Start from different positions (sitting, facing backwards).
- The coach varies the direction of the ball.
Regressions
- Give the defender a 2 m handicap.
Variations
- 2v2: two pairs race for the ball.
Key principles
- Win the race, protect the ball, finish quickly.
