Objective

Shoot at goal after dribbling, reacting to a signal and changing direction quickly.

Organisation

  • 20 × 20 m area with a 10 × 10 m square marked with cones in the middle.
  • A mini goal in the middle of each side, with two cones of one colour next to it: red, blue, yellow and orange.
  • Up to 10 children, each with a ball, inside the square. With more children, set up two areas.

Equipment

  • Balls 1 per player
  • Mini goals × 4
  • Cones × 12

How it works

  1. The children dribble anywhere inside the square without touching anyone.
  2. The coach calls a colour (or holds up a bib of that colour).
  3. Everyone dribbles out of the square towards that goal and shoots from the edge of the square.
  4. They pick up their ball, dribble back into the square and wait for the next colour.
  5. Rounds of 2 minutes: each child counts their goals.

Coaching points

  • Keep the ball close while you dribble in the square.
  • Look up to see the colours before the coach calls one.
  • Turn quickly towards the goal that is called.
  • Look at the goal before you shoot and hit the ball hard.

Progressions

  • Call two colours: each child chooses one of the two goals.
  • Show the colour with a bib instead of calling it, so they have to look at the coach.
  • Shoot with the weaker foot.

Regressions

  • Shoot from closer: put a flat marker 3 m from each goal.
  • Only use two goals, red and blue.

Variations

  • Name animals instead of colours: each goal is an animal's house.

Key principles

  • Everyone has a ball and everyone shoots.
  • React to the signal and turn quickly.

A shooting game for the youngest players with no queues: everyone has a ball and everyone shoots in every round. The children dribble inside a central square until the coach calls one of the four goal colours. Then they have to find the goal, turn, leave the square and shoot from its edge. They collect their ball and dribble back in for the next call.
