Competition raises the quality of shooting practice: players want the point for their team. The coach varies the pass (ground, bouncing, to the weaker foot) so players must adjust their first touch before shooting. Fast turns keep everyone involved.

Objective

Prepare the shot with a good first touch and finish accurately under the pressure of competition.

Organisation

  • Shooting line 14 m from goal (two yellow cones). Two teams in lines on each side, 19 m from goal; the coach in the middle with balls; goalkeeper in goal.

How it works

  1. The coach passes to the first player of a team; one touch to get inside the shooting line, then shoot.
  2. Teams alternate. Goal = 1 point; goal in the far third of the goal = 2.
  3. First team to 15 points wins.

Coaching points

  • First touch out of your feet, towards goal.
  • Look at the goalkeeper's position before shooting.
  • Strike across the goalkeeper to the far corner.

Progressions

  • Defender from the other team chases the shooter.
  • First-time shots only.

Regressions

  • Shorter distance; two touches before the shot.

Variations

  • Goalkeeper from each team in turn.

Key principles

  • Touch to set, strike to score.
