Goal kicks are a set play: the team takes positions (centre-backs wide in the box, full-backs high and wide, midfielder in the middle) and uses the extra player to beat the first line of pressure. The pressing team learns triggers to press the goal kick.
Objective
Use a set structure at goal kicks to beat the first line of pressure.
Organisation
- Area of 40 × 45 m from the goal line. Goal and goalkeeper; two mini-goals on the 40 m line.
- Six players build up (goalkeeper + 5); three press.
How it works
- Every action starts with a goal kick.
- Builders score by dribbling or passing into a mini-goal. Pressers score in the big goal.
- 8 goal kicks, then two builders swap with the pressers.
Coaching points
- Centre-backs open to the edges of the box; full-backs high and wide; midfielder between the pressers.
- Goalkeeper: look for the free player, not the nearest.
- Pressers: press the receiver of the first pass, cut the inside lane.
Progressions
- Four pressers (6v4).
- Goalkeeper must play the first pass inside the box.
Regressions
- Two pressers.
Variations
- Allow the goalkeeper to play long to a target man on the 40 m line.
Key principles
- Structure creates the free player.
