Legend

  • Pass
  • Ball
  • Cone

Young players switch off quickly in a standing stretching routine. Here the ball keeps them involved: they pass gently across the circle, saying the name of the receiver, and whoever has just passed holds the stretch the coach calls out. Heart rate comes down, muscles stretch, and the coach can close the session with the group already together.

Objective

Bring the heart rate down and stretch the main leg muscles while keeping the group focused with slow passes.

Organisation

  • Circle about 10 m across marked with one flat marker per player.
  • One ball (two with more than ten players).

How it works

  1. Pass along the ground across the circle, at walking pace, saying the receiver's name before passing.
  2. The player who has just passed does the stretch the coach called for 10–15 seconds, then is ready to receive again.
  3. Change the stretch every 90 seconds: calves, front of the thigh, back of the thigh, hips (lunge) and inner thigh.
  4. To finish, everybody sits in the circle, takes three slow breaths and says one thing they learned today.

Coaching points

  • Gentle passes: the aim is to calm down, not to compete.
  • Hold each stretch without bouncing; it should pull, not hurt.
  • Stretch both legs: the next time you pass, switch sides.
  • Breathe slowly through the nose during the stretches.

Progressions

  • Pass with the weaker foot.
  • The receiver must control with one foot and pass with the other.

Regressions

  • Pass with the hands for the youngest groups.
  • The whole group stretches together; the ball only goes round the circle in order.

Variations

  • The coach calls two names: those players swap places walking, then the passing continues.

Key principles

  • Calm pace.
  • Stretch without bouncing.
  • Finish the session together.
