After an intense session, an active cool-down helps players lower the heart rate gradually. Walking and passing is easy, social and lets the coach talk to pairs about the session. It is a natural link to the final stretches.

Objective

Lower the heart rate progressively with light passing before stretching.

Organisation

  • Pairs on the goal line, 8 m apart. One ball per pair.

How it works

  1. Walk to the other end of the pitch passing with the inside of the foot: right foot one way, left foot back.
  2. Then one length of chipped passes caught with the hands.
  3. About 4 lengths, then stretching.

Coaching points

  • Calm pace, breathe slowly.
  • Clean passes to the partner's front foot.
  • Talk: what went well today?

Progressions

  • Pass only with the weaker foot.

Regressions

  • Stand still and pass for 3 minutes.

Variations

  • Finish in a circle with the coach for the session review.

Key principles

  • Slow down, stay connected.
