Passing by Numbers Sequence

Each player has a number and passes only to the next number (1 to 2, 2 to 3…) while everyone moves around the area. Players must know where their receiver is before the ball arrives.

Legend

  • Cone

A cognitive passing warm-up: the sequence forces players to keep track of a specific teammate while moving. Add a second ball and a second sequence and the task becomes a real scanning exercise.

Objective

Scan to locate the next receiver while moving and passing.

Organisation

  • Area of 20 × 20 m. Groups of 5–8 players numbered from 1; the last number passes to 1.
  • With more players, two groups in different colours in the same area.

How it works

  1. Pass to the next number and keep moving.
  2. After 2 minutes, reverse the order.
  3. Add a second ball starting at the middle number.

Coaching points

  • Know where your receiver is before you receive.
  • Move into a space where the previous number can find you.
  • Call your number when you are free.

Progressions

  • Two groups in the same area with crossing traffic.
  • One touch only.

Regressions

  • Players stand still in a circle for the first round.

Variations

  • After passing, sprint 5 m into a new space.

Key principles

  • Scan before you receive.
