Turning in tight spaces is a key skill for forwards and midfielders. The mannequin represents a centre-back standing close: there is no time to stop the ball and then turn. Players practise the outside hook, the inside cut and the drag back, and finish within two touches.
Objective
Turn past a close marker with the first touch and finish quickly.
Organisation
- Mannequin 15 m from goal. The receiver stands just in front of it with back to goal. Server 6 m behind the receiver. Goalkeeper in goal.
How it works
- Server passes; the receiver turns around the mannequin with one touch and shoots.
- Series: 4 turns with the inside of the foot, 4 with the outside, 4 drag-backs.
- Alternate sides of the mannequin.
Coaching points
- Check the mannequin's position before the pass.
- Let the ball run across your body for the inside turn.
- Shoot with your second touch.
Progressions
- Replace the mannequin with a passive and then live defender.
- Server plays a bouncing ball.
Regressions
- Allow three touches before the shot.
Variations
- Lay off to a supporting player who shoots first time.
Key principles
- Turn with the first touch.
