1v1 Wide: Show the Attacker Outside

In wide areas, the defender's priority is to stop the attacker cutting inside towards goal. Showing outside sends the attacker to the touchline, where the cross is less dangerous and the touchline helps the defender. The scoring rewards that choice.
Objective
Defend a wide 1v1 by blocking the inside route and forcing the attacker to the touchline.
Organisation
- Channel of 30 × 15 m. A mini-goal on the inside of the end line (shot from inside) and a 5 × 4 m byline zone on the outside.
How it works
- The attacker scores 2 in the mini-goal and 1 by dribbling into the byline zone.
- The defender scores 2 by winning the ball and passing to the coach.
- 6 duels, then swap.
Coaching points
- Approach on a curve, inside the attacker.
- Stand half-turned with your inside foot forward to show the outside.
- Do not dive in; tackle when the attacker pushes the ball down the line.
Progressions
- Add a recovering second defender.
Regressions
- Attacker may only walk the first 10 m.
Variations
- Attacker can cross from the byline zone to a striker (cross must be cleared).
Key principles
- Protect the inside, use the touchline.
