A defensive line is only as strong as its connections. This exercise isolates the back four so they learn to move together with the ball: the nearest defender presses, the others shift across and drop to cover, and the line stays compact. Attackers start by passing slowly, then try to break through the gaps.

Objective

Keep the back four compact, shift towards the ball as a unit and press the ball carrier with cover behind.

Organisation

  • Half pitch (50 × 35 m) with a goal and goalkeeper.
  • Four defenders and a goalkeeper against five attackers.
  • Two cone gates on the halfway line as counter targets for the defenders.

How it works

  1. Phase 1 (4 min): attackers pass across the pitch without trying to break through; defenders shift on every pass.
  2. Phase 2: live play. Attackers try to score in the goal; defenders win the ball and score by dribbling through a gate.
  3. The coach restarts every attack from the attackers' side.
  4. 4 × 4 minutes. Rotate defenders so everyone plays inside and outside positions.

Coaching points

  • Ball-side full-back presses when the ball is played wide; the centre-back next to them covers.
  • Keep 8–10 m between defenders; the far-side full-back tucks in towards the centre.
  • Shift while the ball is travelling, not after it arrives.
  • Line leader (a centre-back) decides when to step up and when to drop.
  • Body shape: side-on so you can see the ball and the runner.

Progressions

  • Add a sixth attacker (5v6 when counting the midfielder).
  • Attackers limited to two touches to increase speed.

Regressions

  • Phase 1 for longer, with the coach calling 'shift!'.
  • Narrower pitch (40 m).

Variations

  • Back three: the same exercise with three centre-backs and two wing-backs.

Key principles

  • Pressure, cover, balance.
  • Compact distances.
  • Move with the ball.
