Long-range shots arrive mostly after a lay-off, when the ball comes back towards the shooter. Striking a moving ball cleanly from 20 m needs the body over the ball and a firm contact with the laces. The mannequins represent a defensive block that leaves no gap closer to goal.
Objective
Strike a moving ball from distance with power and accuracy.
Organisation
- Three mannequins 10 m from goal. Striker just in front of them, back to goal. Midfielders in a line 27 m from goal with balls.
How it works
- Midfielder passes into the striker and runs forward; the striker lays off first time into the shooting zone.
- Midfielder shoots first time before the 18 m line.
- Rotate: midfielder becomes striker. Alternate the direction of the lay-off.
Coaching points
- Approach the ball slightly from the side; standing foot beside it.
- Head and knee over the ball, strike through the middle with the laces.
- Land on the striking foot to keep the shot low.
Progressions
- Add a defender who closes the shooter from the side.
Regressions
- Striker stops the ball for the shooter.
Variations
- Shoot with the weaker foot after a lay-off to that side.
Key principles
- Over the ball, through the ball.
