A tournament turns repetitive 1v1 work into the highlight of the session. Players get many duels against different opponents, and the 'up and down' pitches mean everyone plays opponents of a similar level after a few rounds.
Objective
Attack and defend in 1v1 with full commitment in a competitive format.
Organisation
- Four pitches of 15 × 10 m side by side, each with two mini-goals. Pairs on each pitch; spare balls by each pitch.
How it works
- Games of 90 seconds, 60 seconds rest.
- The winner moves one pitch up (towards pitch 1), the loser one pitch down; draws are decided by rock-paper-scissors.
- The player on pitch 1 at the end is world champion. 8–10 rounds.
Coaching points
- Attack the defender: a feint and change of pace beat a waiting defender.
- Shoot as soon as there is a clear line to the goal.
- Defend side-on and do not dive in.
Progressions
- Goals only count with the weaker foot in the final round.
Regressions
- Bigger goals or a narrower pitch for younger players.
Variations
- 2v2 World Cup with pairs.
Key principles
- Every duel counts.
