Good positioning makes saves easier. The goalkeeper learns to stand on the line between the ball and the centre of the goal, a step or two off the line, and to arrive set before the strike. Shooters practise placement from different angles.
Objective
Take the correct position for each shooting angle and be set before the strike.
Organisation
- Five cones on an arc 12–20 m from goal, from a tight angle on the left to a tight angle on the right. A shooter with balls at each cone.
How it works
- The coach calls a number; that shooter takes a touch and shoots within 3 seconds.
- The goalkeeper must move and set before the shot.
- 3 rounds through all five cones, then random order. Swap goalkeepers.
Coaching points
- Imagine a line from the ball to the middle of the goal and stand on it.
- Move with small side-steps; set (feet still, weight forward) as the shooter's foot goes back.
- Tight angle: protect the near post; central: one or two steps off the line.
Progressions
- Shooters may pass to the next cone for a first-time shot (the keeper must adjust).
Regressions
- Shooters strike with less power, aiming at the keeper's sides.
Variations
- Use a rope from the posts to the ball to show the angle to young keepers.
Key principles
- Position first, then the save.
