  • Goal

With the box closed to outfield players, the team has to create shooting chances from distance: move the defenders with quick passes, use one-twos to open a shooting lane and shoot with the first or second touch. Defenders learn to protect the edge of the box as a compact unit and block shots without diving in.

Objective

Create and take shooting chances from outside the box, and follow every shot for the rebound.

Organisation

  • 40 × 30 m pitch with a goal and goalkeeper at each end.
  • An 8 × 16 m box marked with cones in front of each goal.
  • Two teams of four to six plus goalkeepers; plenty of spare balls in each goal.

How it works

  1. Normal match, but only the goalkeepers may enter the boxes.
  2. A goal only counts if the shot is taken from outside the box.
  3. After a save or a shot off the post, one attacker may enter the box to follow up; a rebound goal counts double.
  4. If a defender enters their own box, the attacking team gets a free shot from the edge.
  5. 4 × 4 minutes.

Coaching points

  • Shoot as soon as you see a gap: first or second touch, low and hard.
  • Set up the shot with the first touch out of your feet, towards the goal.
  • Use a one-two or a quick switch to move the defenders and open a shooting lane.
  • Always have a player ready to follow up the shot.
  • Defenders: stay close together at the edge of the box and block the shot on your feet.

Progressions

  • Two-touch limit.
  • Only first-time shots count.

Regressions

  • Bigger goals or smaller boxes.
  • A neutral who plays with the team in possession.

Variations

  • A goal from your own half counts triple.

Key principles

  • See the goal, shoot.
  • Open the shooting lane.
  • Follow every shot.
