- Goal
Teams playing with three centre-backs build up differently: the outside centre-backs carry the ball into midfield and the wing-backs give all the width. With 7 against 4, the team learns to move the ball across the back three until a wing-back or the midfielder is free.
Objective
Build up with a back three, using wing-backs for width and carrying the ball out from the outside centre-backs.
Organisation
- Area of 45 × 50 m from the goal line. Goal with goalkeeper; three mini-goals on the 45 m line.
- Builders: goalkeeper, three centre-backs, two wing-backs, one holding midfielder. Four pressers.
How it works
- Every attack starts with the goalkeeper.
- Builders score by dribbling or passing into a mini-goal. Pressers score in the big goal.
- 8 attacks, then swap two builders with two pressers.
Coaching points
- Outside centre-backs: open wide and carry the ball forward when a presser does not come.
- Wing-backs: on the touchline, high enough to pull a presser away.
- Holding midfielder: move between the two central pressers.
Progressions
- Five pressers (7v5).
- Only the wing-backs can score.
Regressions
- Three pressers.
Variations
- Add a striker on the 45 m line as a target for long passes.
Key principles
- Width from wing-backs, progression from the outside centre-backs.
