Objective

Dribble with the ball close to the feet, improve coordination with hops and ladder steps, and finish with a controlled shot at the end of every station.

Organisation

  • Mark a 30 × 22 m rectangle with a cone in each corner.
  • Inside it, set up four parallel lanes 25 m long and 5 m apart, with a 2 m mini-goal at the end of each lane.
  • Place a yellow cone 8 m in front of each goal as the shooting spot.
  • Lane 1: place 6 cones in a straight line, 2 m apart, for a slalom dribble.
  • Lane 2: place 4 hoops in a line, 1.5 m apart centre to centre, for hopping without the ball.
  • Lane 3: place 5 cones in a zig-zag, 3 m apart along the lane and 2 m from side to side.
  • Lane 4: lay a 6 m agility ladder, with a cone just before the entry and another just after the exit.
  • Keep the 4 m strip behind the goals as the ball-collection zone.
  • Split the players across the four lanes, 2 to 4 per lane.
  • Give each lane 3 or 4 balls. In lanes 1 and 3 the balls wait at the start, and in lanes 2 and 4 they wait next to the shooting spot.

Equipment

  • Balls × 16
  • Cones × 21
  • Hoops × 4
  • Agility ladder × 1
  • Mini goals × 4

How it works

  1. In lanes 1 and 3 the player dribbles through the cones and keeps dribbling up to the shooting spot.
  2. In lanes 2 and 4 the player starts without the ball, hops through the hoops or skips through the ladder, then runs to the shooting spot and picks up a ball there.
  3. Every shot is taken from the yellow cone, without dribbling closer to the goal.
  4. The next player in the lane sets off once the teammate in front has shot.
  5. Nobody shoots while a teammate is still collecting a ball behind their goal.
  6. If the ball escapes during a station, the player brings it back and carries on from where it was lost.
  7. After shooting, the player collects the ball from beside the goal and returns it to their lane's pile, walking along the side of the lane and never in front of a goal.
  8. The player then joins the back of the next lane: 1 to 2, 2 to 3, 3 to 4 and 4 back to 1.
  9. Play 3 blocks of 6 minutes with a 1-minute drink break between them.

Coaching points

  • Dribble with soft touches and keep the ball close, looking up between touches to see the next cone and the goal.
  • Use both feet, inside and outside, to go round the cones.
  • In the hoops, jump with feet together and land on the balls of your feet with knees slightly bent.
  • In the zig-zag, slow down before each cone and change direction with the foot furthest from it.
  • In the ladder, use short, quick steps inside every square and swing your arms to help you.
  • Look at the goal before you shoot, then watch the ball as you strike it with the inside of the foot or the laces.

Progressions

  • On the second round, shoot with the weaker foot.
  • Move the shooting spot from 8 m back to 10 m once players strike the ball cleanly.
  • Reduce the goal width from 2 m to 1.5 m to demand more accuracy.
  • In lanes 1 and 3, dribble with the weaker foot only.
  • When the coach blows the whistle, players freeze for one second with a foot on the ball, then carry on.

Regressions

  • Bring the shooting spot closer, to 6 m.
  • Space the lane 1 cones 3 m apart.
  • Let players walk through the ladder with one foot in each square.
  • Allow the youngest players to stop the ball before shooting.

Variations

  • Team challenge: the whole group adds up the goals from all four lanes and tries to beat that total in the next block.
  • Change the ladder movement to side steps, with one foot in each square.

Key principles

  • Ball close: many soft touches are better than a few hard ones.
  • Quality before speed: do it well first, then do it faster.
  • Head up: look up between touches.
  • Safety and turns: shoot only when the collection zone is clear.

A simple circuit for the youngest players, with four lanes set up side by side. Each lane works a different movement. Lanes 1 and 3 are dribbling lanes, with a straight slalom and a zig-zag. Lanes 2 and 4 are coordination lanes without the ball, with hoops and an agility ladder. Every lane finishes with a shot from 8 m into a 2 m mini-goal. After each shot the player moves to the next lane, so everyone gets plenty of variety and many touches. There is no opposition, so the focus is on close ball control, coordination and a clean strike.
